I know that if you go to the Remington web site you can look plug in your model 700 Serial number and find out the date it was made. They say it's like it runs on ball bearings and I think that's accurate. If you do go for the 870, the police and Wingmasters versions are a better version alternatives, certainly the older ones are as good, perhaps better (according to about everyone), than the new ones. So 1966-1967 is about when your gun was manufactured. If I recall correctly the SN prefix letter started in the mid-1960s.As an aside for people looking for amazing price to performance ratio: Remington made something called a Model 31 that predated the 870. The Collectors webpage also had a rough date range for 870 receivers based on the prefix letter. I also tracked the manufacture years of my two Wingmasters and an 870 Special Purpose by calling. He checked some other records and finally came back with 1960. She had to consult the custom shop and the custom shop guy asked me some questions about the gun.
